The food-centric website The Daily Meal has named Bubba’s Sulky Lounge in Portland one of the 25 Best Dive Bars in America.

The bar, located at 92 Portland St., has been a scruffy Portland landmark for 47 years, but grew in popularity when it started offering “’80s nights” on Fridays and dance parties on Saturday nights.

“This colorful bar is full of antiques that are hanging from the ceilings, sitting on the bar, and bolted to the walls, which were sought out and collected by Bubba himself,” The Daily Meal wrote.

The website pointed out that singer Patty Griffin, a Maine native, even wrote a song about the place: “Please pass the bottle on/Pass it on and on/Till every drop is gone…”

The bar has two bars and two dance floors, including one disco floor that lights up to music of the ’70s and ’80s. Strings of lunchboxes hang on the walls as decoration.

Like all good dive bars, Bubba’s opens at 8 a.m.

Other bars that made the list include Santa’s Pub in Nashville, the Salty Dawg Saloon in Anchorage, and The Buffet Bar & Crockpot in Tuscon. No. 1 on the list was Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon in Austin.
