I had a delightful experience running in the Aug. 6 Beach to Beacon 10K race; it is a beautiful course, well-organized, enthusiastic and supportive spectators and volunteers, and collegial fellow runners.
However, the Maine Sunday Telegram article, “As Beach to Beacon race grows, charitable donations fall off pace” (Aug. 7), raised questions about TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K Inc.’s 501(c)(3) charitable status.
With a “Mission of Race” to support a different Maine charity each year, writer Steve Craig reported that a review of the organization’s latest 2014 tax filings shows revenue of $926,967 – and $5,462, or 0.59 percent, in charitable donations!
The organization is clearly a for-profit entity sheltered behind its nonprofit status. This is an insult to legitimate Maine nonprofits.
