Boston Red Sox catcher Ryan Hanigan, currently on the 15-day disabled list because of left ankle tendinitis, started behind the plate Saturday for the Portland Sea Dogs against the Trenton Thunder as he began a rehab assignment.

Hanigan was placed on the DL on Aug. 8. He is expected to serve as Portland’s designated hitter in Sunday’s game – the Sea Dogs’ final home game of the season.
