ORONO - Robyn Parks had 22 points and 12 rebounds Saturday to lead Virginia Commonwealth to a 74-58 victory against the University of Maine in a nonconference women's basketball game.
Virginia Commonwealth (2-3) took command early, opening a 12-4 lead in the first four minutes.
Brittany Wells scored 14 points for Maine (1-5), which never got closer than five points in the second half.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
UNE 70, ST. JOSEPH (VT.) 63: Devin Thompson and Charles Fenner III combined for 44 points to lead the Nor'easters (1-4) past the Fighting Saints (3-5) in the consolation game of UMass-Boston's Harbor Invitational.
Jesse Dyskstra added 14 points and 13 rebounds for UNE. The Nor'easters used an 8-0 run to take a 16-12 lead with 12:52 left in the first half and never trailed again.
MEN'S HOCKEY
UNE 3, SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE 1: Ryan Quinn broke a 1-1 tie at 4:10 of the second period and Craig Ryan made 27 saves to help the Nor'easters (2-5) beat the Penmen (0-2-1) in the first round of the Manchester PAL/Stovepipe Tournament at Hooksett, N.H.
Adam Laite and Nick Kolb also scored for UNE, which will face UMass-Boston in the title game Sunday.
BOWDOIN 6, SALVE REGINA 5: Robert Toczylowski had two goals and an assist, and Daniel Weiniger also scored twice for the Polar Bears (3-0-1), who took a 3-1 first-period lead and held off the Seahawks (2-6) in the opening round of the Bowdoin-Colby Face-Off Classic at Brunswick.
Kyle Lockwood added a goal and an assist for Bowdoin. Harry Matheson and Ollie Koo each had two assists.
Peter Gintoli had two goals and an assist for Salve Regina.
COLBY 6, SUFFOLK 1: Michael Smigelski and Matt Gelnaw each had a goal and two assists for the Mules (1-3), who took a 4-1 first-period lead against the Rams (3-3-1) in the first game of the Bowdoin-Colby Face-Off Classic at Brunswick.
Nick Lanza added a goal and an assist, and Matt Delaney made 28 saves.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY
WILLIAMS 8, UNE 1: Gabrielle Vukasin and Andree Heller each had a hat trick and the Ephs (2-1) outshot the Nor'easters (0-3) 62-10 at Williamstown, Mass.
Nitsan Goldstein added a goal for Williams. Kris McLaughlin scored for UNE.
