This past weekend, the best players from the Maine Girls Ice Hockey Association took on the top players from New Hampshire in the third annual High School All-Star Classic at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham. The Saturday afternoon game was close throughout and New Hampshire eventually secured a 2-1 win in overtime.

The first two periods were scoreless despite the fact that the Maine all-stars outshot New Hampshire by a wide margin. Entering the third period Maine led in that category, 25-12.

New Hampshire had the game’s first goal when Katie Bradford of Lebanon scored on a dish from Josie Fisher of Hanover just 13 seconds into the third period. That lead was short-lived, however, as Erica VanDerWerf of St. Dom’s converted on a pass from Dani Cyr of Greely just three minutes later.

“The girls from Maine really outplayed the New Hampshire girls overall,” said Maine coach Julie Roberts. “It was a great game. This game showed the talent in Maine for girls’ hockey and it was an exciting game to be at.”

New Hampshire’s Regan Carbone of Oyster River buried the game-winner with just 1:49 left to play in overtime.

“It was quite a game,” said Roberts. “The Maine all-stars had a great game. We outplayed them all three periods. All the girls gave their all.”

Claire Jackson of Cape Elizabeth and Chelsea Barrett of Scarborough combined on the offensive side for Maine to produce a handful of scoring opportunities. Jackson helped her team reach the quarterfinals of the recent Tier I MGIHA tourney. Barrett helped lead Scarborough all the way to the semifinals in the Tier II tournament before losing to eventual champion Biddeford.

“Claire and Chelsea worked hard producing some quality shots,” Roberts said.

Biddeford defenseman Ashley Potvin also played well for the Maine all-stars.

Morgan Barnes scored the final goal of the game on an assist from Courtney Carnes of Winslow and Cape teammate Claire Jackson.

The White’s shutout was helped by the strong defensive play of Maureen Kertes of Cape Elizabeth.

In the Tier II contest, it was the Red team that scored first when Katie Cobb of Lewiston used a pass from Caitlin Caldwell of Gorham to give their squad a 1-0 advantage.

The Yellow team tied the game when Lauren Clark of Skowhegan scored thanks to assists from Nicole Simmonds of Yarmouth and Lizzy Fecteau of Biddeford.

Outstanding players for the Yellow team included the Scarborough trio of Chelsea Barrett, Jackie Morin and Jordan Finley along with Biddeford defensemen Caitlin Pleau and Ashley Potvin and Tiger goalie Alex Hennedy.
