The Cape Elizabeth softball team moved a step closer to its third straight Western Maine Class B title with a 3-0 extra-innings win over Maranacook on Saturday in Readfield.

The No. 3 Capers (17-1) scored three times in the top of the eighth and got a complete-game shutout from pitcher Tricia Thibodeau to earn the road win over the No. 2 Black Bears.

Cape was scheduled to face No. 1 Fryeburg Academy on Wednesday for the regional title at St. Joe’s College in Standish in a game played after the Current’s deadline. Fryeburg defeated Cape 1-0 when the teams met in May in a regular-season contest.

The Capers are the defending Maine Class B champs, having defeated Winslow 2-1 a year ago. Two years ago, Cape fell to Bucksport 8-6 in the state championship game after winning the school’s first-ever Western Maine softball crown.
