The awards were open to all high school seniors residing in Scarborough who plan to pursue post-secondary education. Applications were evaluated based on financial need, scholarship, extracurricular activities or unique accomplishment or achievement.

The Scarborough Community Scholarship Foundation was founded in October 2006 as a chapter of the Scholarship America program, Dollars for Scholars. The nonprofit organization is governed by a board of directors made up of community volunteers and high school students.

The foundation will launch an awareness and fundraising campaign this summer to build its endowment. The organization hopes to eventually award annual scholarships to all seniors residing in Scarborough who plan to pursue a post-secondary education.
