PORTLAND — Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland presented awards to 27 individuals and 17 organizations for helping to eliminate poverty housing at its 2009 Volunteers of the Year celebration.

2009 Golden Hammer Award individual winners include William Bell, Andy Cadot, Anne Callender, Jennifer Caswell, Kelley Craig, Mike and Katie Crowley, Will Curley, Tony Doman, Scott Dow, Matthew Goldfarb, Susan Hight, Paul Horn, Stephen & Carolyn Jenks, Judy Kimball, Ed Kirstein, Dan Kolber, Jon Kuell, Barbara Lambach, Dennis Levasseur, Danika McClenahan, Jim Moore, Elisabeth Rudenberg, Gordon Thompson, Dawud Ummah, Dennis Walch, Bob Wall, and Rita Yarnold.

Holistic pharmacy
opens at InterMed

PORTLAND — Apothecary by Design, a modern pharmacy offering prescription compounding, nutritional health and wellness support, and specialty coffee shop PeRx-U-Up Cafe, has recently opened at the InterMed building at 84 Marginal Way in Portland.

The pharmacy provides personalized services by pharmacy, nursing and homeopathic professionals, including Tom Madden, R.Ph., Joseph Lorello, R.Ph., and Greg Boucouvalas, R.Ph.

Governor presents
volunteer awards

AUGUSTA — At the annual Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards celebration, Governor John Baldacci presented Jenni Ricci of Portland with the award for Outstanding National Service Volunteer for accomplishments during her AmeriCorps service with the Community Resource Corps and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland.

The Corporate Volunteerism Award was presented to Hannaford Bros. in recognition of its extensive donations to community programs, employees’ volunteer work and for sponsoring numerous community initiatives and events.

New Ventures

Andrea Rouda of Freeport, recently relocated from Washington, D.C., is opening a new art gallery, The Wonderful Gallery, on Saturday, June 6 at 152 Maine St. in Freeport. The gallery will feature work by Maine artist Catherine Breer and will also showcase an eclectic mix of painting, photography, sculpture and hand-painted furniture.

Maine Home+Design magazine has recently acquired Port City Life magazine. Publishers Kevin Thomas and Susan Kelley will be working with Port City Life former publisher and editor, Laurie Hyndman, in her new capacity as managing editor, to reposition the magazine. A major relaunch of the publication is planned for September, 2009.

Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty has formed a satellite sales team, the Maine Inn Brokerage, dedicated exclusively to buying and selling bed and breakfast properties in Maine. The team will be comprised of Don Johnson from Portland, Rick Griffin of Kennebunk and Ed Mitchell of Camden.

Christine Germano of North Yarmouth has become an independent consultant with Tastefully Simple, a national gourmet food direct-sales company.

The Maine Center for Enterprise Development in Portland has a new affiliate client, Visible Government Online, a web-based subscription service providing access to public data sets and analytical tools.

Aucocisco Galleries recently moved from Congress Street to 89 Exchange St. in Portland’s Old Port. Gallery owner Andres A. Verzosa opened the gallery with an exhibit of diptych oil paintings by Mary Hart and selected works from the estate of Bernard Langlais.

Town & Country Credit Union opened its newly remodeled Scarborough branch at 257 U.S. Route 1, next to the Town Hall. To support its commitment to personalized banking, the branch includes free-standing stations, an internet cafe, children’s play area, and a video information and messaging system.

Bayley’s Camping Resort in Scarborough, a 727-site campground, has nearly completed a $3 million expansion that includes the addition of 200 new campsites, 100 upgraded campsites with wireless Internet and grounds improvements.

Awards

Lynne Richard of Peaks Island, environmental education coordinator at the Portland Water District, was presented with the 2009 Outstanding Environmental Educators Award from the department of environmental science at USM.

Fisher & Phillips, an employment and labor law firm with offices in Portland, was awarded the 2009 Best Law Firm Newsletter from the Burton Awards for Legal Achievement given in association with the Library of Congress. 

David and Michael Banks of RE/MAX By The Bay in Portland were recognized as the Broker/Owner of the Year for New England by RE/MAX International Inc. 

Duval’s Service Center of South Portland was named the Maine Approved Auto Repair Facility of the Year for the second year in a row by AAA Northern New England.
