Asen joins White
House intern program
WASHINGTON, DC — Jonathan Asen of Portland was selected to participate in the White House Internship Program for the fall, 2009 semester.
Asen, a student at Trinity College, was one of 112 students chosen from across the country to join one of several White House departments.
Portland students earn
letter of commendation
PORTLAND — Eleven students at Deering, Portland and Casco Bay High School were named commended students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program.
The Deering High School commended students are Alexandra Jackson, Jami LeRoy, Keleigh O’Neil and Brian Pedro.
The Portland High commended students are Simon Thompson, Emma Wilson, Max Dismore and Corey Carmichael.
Jacqueline Maasch, Charlotte McDonald and Donald Bennett are the Casco Bay High School students to receive a letter of commendation.
While these students will not continue in the 2010 competition for National Merit Scholarships, the letter of commendation is given in recognition of the 34,000 students who placed among the top five percent of the 1.5 million students nationwide who entered the scholarship competition.
Deering students
hold cancer benefit
PORTLAND — A Relay for Life team comprised of students from Deering High School has coordinated a benefit event for the American Cancer Society on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Flatbread Restaurant in Portland.
From 5 to 9 p.m. the restaurant will donate $3.50 for every large pizza or $1.75 per small pizza purchased at its location at 72 Commercial St.
