RICHMOND, Va. – Darren Ford’s RBI single capped a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday night, giving the Richmond Flying Squirrels a 5-4 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs.
The Sea Dogs were in control throughout the series finale until the ninth, when relievers Bryce Cox and Ryne Reynoso couldn’t get the final three outs.
A walk, a hit batsman and a one-out RBI single by Sharlon Schoop broke up the shutout bid. Tyler LaTorre followed with another RBI single, and Clay Timpner reached on an error as Schoop scored to make it 5-3.
Cox was replaced by Reynoso, who gave up a tying single by Brad Boyer and Ford’s winning hit.
The Sea Dogs took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Anthony Rizzo doubled and scored on a single by Jorge Padron. They nearly added to their lead two batters later, but Ryan Lavarnway was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Clay Timpner after a single by Chih-Hsien Chiang.
Matt Sheely and Che-Hsuan Lin led off the fifth with back-to-back singles, and Nate Spears hit a three-run homer to extend the lead to 4-0.
Meanwhile, Portland starter Jeremy Kehrt allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out four over six scoreless innings. Eammon Portice followed with two scoreless innings, giving up two hits.
The Sea Dogs are off today before starting a three-game series Tuesday against the Altoona Curve at Hadlock Field.
