PORTLAND — A Maine group is using a tongue-in-cheek midway-style street carnival to decry the influence of oil companies’ influence on national energy policy.
Environment Maine today hosted CarnivOil: The Biggest Mess on Earth, in Portland’s Monument Square. Director Emily Figdor said the goal is to point out that big oil interests have blocked efforts to move to clean energy and want to roll back critical Clean Air Act protections.
Sean Mahoney of the Conservation Law Foundation says big oil “continues to call the shots in Congress.”
The 25-city CarnivOil campaign by Clean Energy Works featured carnival games, like knocking down oil barrels instead of milk bottles. The marquee event was a boxing match between British Petroleum CEO Tony Hayward and a giant crab from the Gulf of Mexico.
