Jumbo Ozaki finally gets some respect, earns entry into World Golf Hall of Fame

Jumbo Ozaki finally gets to celebrate in America when he is inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Ozaki, who won more than 100 tournaments and led the Japan Golf Tour money list 12 times, was elected through the international ballot by receiving 50 percent of the vote from a panel of journalists, golf dignitaries and Hall of Fame members. He will be inducted May 9 at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla., along with Ernie Els, Doug Ford, the late Jock Hutchison and former President George H.W. Bush. Ozaki had 111 victories, all in Japan except for the New Zealand PGA Championship in 1972.

• Colin Montgomerie plans to recommend that Europe’s Ryder Cup selection process be changed after having to leave Paul Casey and Justin Rose off his team. Montgomerie captained Europe to victory over the United States at Celtic Manor in Wales last weekend. Casey is ranked seventh in the world and has finished in the top 10 in seven of the 17 tournaments he has played this year. Rose has won two PGA Tour events in 2010 and won three out of four matches at the 2008 Ryder Cup in Valhalla. Because they didn’t play much on the European PGA tour, they didn’t earn automatic berths on Europe’s Ryder Cup team.

TENNIS

WTA: Venus Williams is done for the season because of a left knee injury that has sidelined her for most of the second half of 2010. In a statement, the seven-time Grand Slam champion said she is “very disappointed to announce that I will be unable to play” in the WTA Tour Championships at the end of October, and the Fed Cup final between the United States and Italy at San Diego in November. She is No. 3 in this week’s WTA rankings.

TRACK AND FIELD

World and Olympic 100-meter champion Shelly-Ann Fraser of Jamaica was suspended for six months Wednesday after failing a doping test. Fraser will be ineligible to compete until Jan. 7, the IAAF announced. She was provisionally suspended by the track and field governing body in June after she tested positive for the drug oxycodone at the Diamond League meet May 23 in Shanghai. Fraser had a dental procedure shortly before flying to China for the meet. She said she took a painkiller because of a toothache.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Detroit Red Wings have assigned forward Kirk Maltby to the minors. General Manager Ken Holland says he expects Maltby to tell him today if he is going to retire or play for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League. The 37-year-old Maltby has been a Red Wing since the 1995-96 season.

PREP SCHOOLS

BOYS’ SOCCER: Chris Wild scored twice for Berwick Academy (7-0) in a 7-0 win over Landmark School (1-5) at South Berwick.

• Samuel Blanchet and Jock Cooperrider scored two goals apiece to lead Hebron Academy to a 4-2 win over Hyde School at Bath. Tyrone Freston scored twice for the Phoenix, tying the game at two in the 44th minute. Blanchet put the Lumberjacks ahead in the 60th minute.
