AUGUSTA — A planned extension of the International Appalachian Trail is getting a major boost as several chapters from European countries endorse the project.
Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, England, Ireland and Wales signed on today as IAT chapters. The IAT is an extension of the Appalachian Trail which begins at Maine’s Mount Katahdin, extends through eastern Canada and will cross the North Atlantic Ocean following mountains that formed the same chain as the Appalachians millions of years ago.
Greenland and Scotland joined the IAT last year, and the international organization hopes to add Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Algeria next year.
IAT geologist Walter Anderson says that by joining, the countries agree to set up portions of the trail within their borders.
