FALMOUTH — The train carrying rail for the expansion of the Amtrak Downeaster service to Brunswick never made it to Portland today.

Jim Russell, a project manager for the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, said the train spent most of the day in Falmouth, with crews laying down track after its threader car experienced mechanical difficulties.

That means the 2,000-foot-long train will have to cross up to 14 Portland intersections on Thursday as it completes its mission. Commuters could experience delays up to 30 minutes on such crossings as Allen Avenue and Congress Street.

The train will not enter the Allen Avenue intersection before 9 a.m., Russell said.

Russell said he expects the job to be finished by the end of the day on Thursday.
