HARPSWELL — Last night’s public hearing on a proposal to close the West Harpswell School has been rescheduled to Jan. 25 due to stormy weather.

School Administrative District 75 will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Harpswell Islands School next Tuesday.
The hearing is an opportunity for voters to comment or ask questions about the upcoming Feb. 1 referendum that will ask if Harpswell residents support authorizing the Board of Directors of SAD 75 to close the West Harpswell School.

A message posted on the district’s website says that the state Commissioner of Education has determined that a vote to keep the school open will cost the town an additional $191,000 next school year. A similar referendum was held last year and voters chose to keep the school open – a decision that cost the town an additional $219,000.

School district officials believe it would be more cost efficient and in the best interest of students if West Harpswell School is closed and combined with the Harpswell Islands School.

Voting will take place on Feb. 1 at the Merriconeag Grange Hall, Cundy’s Harbor Community Building, and the Old Orr’s Island School. For more information about the proposed school closure, go to www.link75.org.
