One-act play at Deering

Deering High School will present “Exhibit This,” a one-act comedy by Luigi Jannuzzi about the Metropolitan Museum of Art, at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the school, 370 Stevens Ave.

Mardi Gras Ball at Eastland

The annual Mardi Gras Ball will be 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Eastland Park Hotel. Robert Sylvain & the Cajun Aces will perform, and chef Marc Bell will create a multi-course meal with authentic Louisiana cuisine.

People attending the event will receive Mardi Gras beads, throws and a chance to win door prizes.

The master of ceremonies for this year’s event is Jeff Peterson, a news anchor with WGME-TV (Channel 13) and FOX 23 and a former New Orleans resident. Floor seating is $40, select balcony seating is offered for $50. Proceeds from the event will support Portland Cathedral School.

Summer school open house

Waynflete School will hold an open house to discuss its summer programs from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the school, 360 Spring St.

The summer program, from June 13 to July 29, offers a range of activities or kids age 3 to 16 years old. Individuals who attend the open house will be entered to win a free camp membership in the summer program they choose.

Spirits Alive on Civil War

Spirits Alive, an advocacy group for Portland’s Eastern Cemetery, is offering a series of presentations at 10 a.m. on Saturdays at the Maine Historical Society on the theme “Death and Survival in the Civil War.”

Tom Desjardin, chief historian for Maine, will give a talk Saturday on “Civil War Heroes and Heroines Buried in Evergreen Cemetery.”

The theme of the series was chosen to recognize the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.

The event is free, but a small donation is suggested.

The Greater Portland Chapter of Maine Genealogical Society will meet at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 29 Ocean House Road.

Diane Bergstedt will present a talk, “Rednecks and Red Men,” at 1 p.m.

Student art presentation

Students at Greely High School and North Yarmouth Academy will present a student art exhibition from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Community Music Center, 317 Main St.

The drawings, design pieces and paintings are by AP and IB students Alicia Hoffman, Brandon Pinette, Marina Silverman, Lena Champlin, Sarah Ezzio and Katie Longo. The show will continue from noon to 6 p.m. through March 25.

High school Science Bowl

The annual Northern New England Science Bowl competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the University of Southern Maine’s Bailey Hall.

Teams of high school students from Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont will compete in a game show similar to “Jeopardy.”

The winning regional teams earn an all-expense-paid trip to the National Science Bowl in April in Washington, D.C. The event is free and open to the public.

Breezemeere Boys concert

The Breezemeere Boys will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the New Gloucester Congregational Church, 19 Gloucester Hill Road.

Open house at history barn

The New Gloucester Historical Society will hold an open house from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday in its history barn, behind the Town Hall on Route 231.

Falmouth Memorial Library will hold a silent auction and annual fundraiser, “Beauty and the Books” from Monday through March 31 at the library, 5 Lunt Road.

The event will feature dozens of art and craft items donated to the library by local artists and crafters. All proceeds will benefit the library.

Teen Tech Week at library

The Scarborough Public Library is holding Teen Tech Week, with free events from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, including an opportunity for teens to play vintage video games. Other activities will use laptops and typewriters. Students will also have the opportunity to record an audio book using a reel-to reel tape recording system.
