AUGUSTA — Maine utility regulators have denied Central Maine Power’s request to build a 115-kilovolt transmission project in the Lewiston-Auburn area, known as the Lewiston Loop.

The Public Utilities Commission unanimously ruled that CMP had not met a public need standard for the project. That standard takes into account economics, reliability, public health and safety, and other considerations.

The commissioners also noted that a number of upgrades would need to be done even if the Lewiston Loop proposal was constructed.

As proposed, the Lewiston Loop would consist of a 115-kilovolt line from Gulf Island substation to a proposed Middle Street substation and a line to connect to the Lewiston Lower substation.
