FALMOUTH — Firefighters from Falmouth and surrounding towns were already rolling Tuesday night for a fire on Whitney Farm Way when a second call came in for a fire on Gray Road.

Firefighters were called to 3 Whitney Farm Way at 6:36 p.m. for a fire in a garage. Responders were able to remove the burning car from the garage preventing the fire from spreading to the structure, according to a Falmouth Fire Department press release.

The house was filled with smoke and had to be ventilated.

At 6:52 p.m., another call came in, this time for a house burning at 481 Gray Road. Portland Ladder 4 and Cumberland Heavy Rescue 103 arrived in less than five minutes, having already been under way to assist with the first fire, the release said.

Firefighters started to search the house for people but the roof started to collapse and firefighters were ordered out of the building.

Firefighters from Falmouth, North Yarmouth, Windham and Gray helped fight the fire, along with the Portland and Cumberland crews, with Yarmouth covering the town’s central fire station.

The house turned out to be unoccupied and the homeowner arrived about 45 minutes after the fire broke out. He is staying with family members in the area.

The house was destroyed and the owner’s cat was missing.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
