SIX WELLS HIGH SCHOOL art students have placed in the Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, a national contest sponsored regionally by Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk that is open to all Maine students in grades 7 through 12.

Winners included seniors Megan Foster, who won the Silver Key Award for Photography Art Portfolio, and Emily Knight, who won one Gold Key Award for Drawing, four Silver Key awards including one for Art Portfolio, plus one Honorable Mention.

Seniors Cheyenne Bastille and Courtney Crawford and juniors Wantana Theerathampitak and Kaley Merrill won honorable mentions in the contest.

KENNEBUNK

TAYLOR DEELY, a 2007 graduate of Kennebunk High School and a 2010 graduation of Southern Maine Community College, recently graduated from the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps following a 10-month leadership development intensive.

Deely, 21, and her AmeriCorps team were based out of Vinton, Iowa. They traveled to locations throughout the United States to provide community service, including to rebuild a children’s camp in Michigan, provide flood relief in Wisconsin, remove invasive species from Minnesota prairies and work with disabled adults at a community center in South Dakota. Deely also will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for her service.

BRUNSWICK-CAMDEN

CURTIS MEMORIAL LIBRARY of Brunswick and Camden Public Library have received “Smart investing@your library” grants to help fund financial education programs.

The two were among just 20 libraries across the country to be awarded grants from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation and the American Library Association.

The funding will be used to develop a variety of technologies to bring financial and investor literacy education opportunities to library patrons. For more information, visit www.finra.org.

EDWARD E. LANGBEIN JR. has received the Bowdoin Alumni Council’s 2011 Alumni Service Award for volunteer service to the college.

A decorated military veteran, Langbein, from the Class of 1957, served nearly three decades in the Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Langbein earned numerous commendations during his career, including five Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and medals for meritorious service from the Army and Department of Defense.

Langbein has served on the Bowdoin Alumni Council and played a key role in several Bowdoin alumni associations.

He and his wife, Nancy, established the Edward E. Langbein Sr. Summer Research Award in memory of his father, a past president and secretary of the Bowdoin Fathers Association, which became the Bowdoin Parents Association.

ELIOT

MARSHWOOD HIGH SCHOOL has won the “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” at the state level of competition for the third consecutive year and will compete at the national finals level of the contest, set for April 30-May 2 in Washington, D.C.

BELFAST

CORNERSPRING MONTESSORI School sixth-grader Emmett Shell won first place in the Math Counts Competition held at Thomas College recently.

Shell competed in his first math competition against 75 other students in grades 6 through 8. He will advance to the state competition, to be held March 26 in Fairfield.
