SOUTH PORTLAND

PARKS AND RECREATION is accepting registrations for its pre-school programs.

On Our Way is for children who will be 3 years old on or before Oct. 15. Hours are 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays and Fridays. Cost is $42 per week.

The Growing Years is for children who will be 4 years old on or before Oct. 15, and for 5-year-olds who will not be attending kindergarten for the 2011-12 school year. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays. Cost for this program is $70 per week.

THE MATH TEAM at Cheverus High School captured the Division B State Championship title at the 35th annual Maine State Math Meet. Cheverus narrowly defeated Fryeburg Academy by a score of 676 to 669. The daylong competition drew nearly 1,000 students from 99 public and private schools.

Individual awards were presented to Deidre Lambert of Cumberland Foreside and Jessica Krause of Kennebunkport, who tied for 15th place among all seniors. Colin Swords of Scarborough placed 14th among seniors; Connor Mains of Windham, placed fifth among sophomores; and DaHyung Chung placed as the second-best freshman.

The following seniors were invited to participate in the national math meet: Patrick Jerome of Falmouth; Deirdre Lambert of Cumberland Foreside; Emily LaVerriere of Biddeford; and Jenna Rodrigues of Westbrook.

 

TWO STUDENTS in the robotics program at Portland Arts and Technology High School recently won gold medals at a Skills USA state competition in Bangor.

Seth Guiod and Devon Kelley built a robot for the RoboRescue challenge. The PATHS team had to build a robot in 90 minutes able to navigate through a simulated disaster scene via an on-board webcamera and deliver a life-saving payload to a victim.

Each student won a $1,000 scholarship at Johnson and Wales University and an invitation to compete at the National Skills Championship in Kansas City in June.

NORTH YARMOUTH

EVAN KENDALL AND BEN GEORGE, members of Boy Scout Troop 92 of the Casco Bay District, received the Eagle Scout award last month at a ceremony at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Kendall, son of Kathryn Kendall of Portland and Kevin Kendall of Durham, is a junior at North Yarmouth Academy. His Eagle Scout project involved building an information kiosk at Royal River Park in Yarmouth.

George, son of Ken and Rose George of Yarmouth, is a freshman at Yarmouth High School. His Eagle Scout project involved building a trail for people to walk their dogs and enjoy nature on Cousins Island in Yarmouth.
