PORTLAND — Twenty-six students enrolled in Latin classes at Portland High School recently won national awards based on their scores on the National Latin Exam, school officials announced today.

Maddie Holton won a gold medal. Silver medal winners are Cody Cook, Evan Peaco, Margaret Adham, Charlie Gauvin and Ryan Dixon.

The magna cum laude winners are: Jack Swann, Annette Denekas, Monica Reno, Tiffany Harlow, Alli Briggs and Meghan Kelly.

The following students won cum laude honors: Will Chapman, Clare Kenny, Kiril Slussky, Isabel Walter, Jack Carroll, Anthony Green, Tyler Strauss, Jesse Lupica-Nowlin, Rachel Waterhouse, Brett Howell, Emma Chance, Justin Very, Agnes Jackson and Boutavee Kim.

Next year, 276 students have enrolled in Latin classes at Portland High, and 66 students are taking Greek. The classes, taught by Michelle Tucci and Philip Thibault, are open to students from the district’s two other high schools, Deering and Casco Bay.
