WESTBROOK – The city has fined Pike Industries $3,000 for twice violating a consent agreement regulating the quarrying company’s blasts.

The two violations occurred last month when Pike was blasting to construct an access road to its Spring Street quarry.

On May 17, a blast exceeded the agreement’s 129-decibel noise limit by 0.3 decibels. For that, the city fined Pike the maximum $2,500.

On May 20, Pike blasted about 40 minutes after the 3 p.m. deadline. The blast was scheduled for earlier in the day but was delayed due to an electrical problem. Pike decided to conduct the blast and violate the agreement rather than leave live explosives in the ground over the weekend.

The city fined Pike $500 for that violation.

The consent agreement regulating the blasts was reached in November by the city, Pike and Idexx Laboratories, the first neighboring company to oppose Pike’s plans to expand its quarrying activities on Spring Street.
