Portland Trails announced that its executive director, Nan Cumming, is stepping down from her position after 12 years to become executive director of the Maine Crafts Association.

Cumming will begin her new position Feb. 1.

During Cumming’s tenure, Portland Trails increased its trail network to almost 35 miles of connected walking and biking paths; added trails in Falmouth, Westbrook and South Portland; and launched a schoolground greening initiative to bring safe, natural playgrounds to Portland-area schools.

In addition, Portland Trails published its first “Portland Trails Map and Trail Guide,” and completed capital campaigns to purchase 68 acres of land on the Presumpscot River and to build the Bayside Trail.

“The organization owes an incredible debt of gratitude to Nan. In some ways she is leaving at the top of her game,” said Nathan Smith, one of Portland Trails’ three founding members.
