PORTLAND — Yarmouth High School’s head football coach will become the new head coach for Portland High School.

Superintendent James C. Morse said he has accepted a recommendation from a committee that was formed to conduct a search for a new head coach. That committee recommended that James Hartman be named to replace Mike Bailey, who resigned his position in December.

In a memo from Chief Operations Officer Peter Eglinton, which was given to the School Board at its Tuesday night meeting, Eglinton said Hartman will bring 25 years of coaching experience at the youth, junior high school and varsity level to Portland.

His experience includes coaching varsity softball at South Portland High School and basketball at Lincoln Middle School.

More recently, Hartman, who lives in Portland, started and developed the Yarmouth High School football program. He has been Yarmouth’s only football coach since the program was created five years ago.
Over the last two seasons, Yarmouth High School won 24 straight games and back to back Class C championships.
