SCARBOROUGH – A local woman has learned a valuable lesson about personal property and the power of social media.

On Tuesday, the Scarborough Police Department posted on its Facebook page that an orange, child-sized Quickie wheelchair was taken from a home on Winterberry Lane sometime after noon on March 20. Handicapped teen Chris Fitzgerald used the chair, which his mother leaves when she can’t meet him personally, for the quarter-mile trip from the school bus stop to his home.

The posting was picked up by Current Publishing media partner, WCSH6 NEWSCENTER, and, within 24 hours, Fitzgerald had his chair back.

According to Scarborough police, an unnamed woman who saw the chair at the side of the road presumed it had been abandoned called to say she had taken it an area Goodwill store. The chair was then taken to the police department and returned to its rightful owner.

“As a reminder,” wrote SPD administrative assistant Kim Sperlich, who maintains the department’s Facebook page, “don’t take anything from the end of someone’s driveway unless there is a sign saying it is ok, or you verify with the homeowner.”
