Independent candidate for the U.S. Senate Angus King on Monday will introduce business leaders who oppose an attack ad currently running on television airwaves.

The campaign is holding a press event at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland at 11 a.m.

The ad, which dubs King the “king of spending,” is part of a $400,000 effort by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce designed to boost Republican candidate Charlie Summers. Summers picked up the chamber’s endorsement last week.

The King campaign has blasted the ad for not recognizing King’s record of helping businesses during his two terms as governor.

Dana Connors, head of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, told the Press Herald that the ads don’t represent the views of the Maine chamber. Connors, who was part of King’s transition team when he became governor, emphasized that the chamber isn’t endorsing King or any candidate.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce ad is part of a multi-state effort to bolster Republican congressional candidates. Many of the ads in other states blast Democratic candidates for supporting President Obama federal health care law.
