DURHAM — The town will hold a public forum on Oct. 22 to provide information to voters on a ballot proposal to consider withdrawing from Regional School Unit 5.

Initiated by citizens’ petition, the question of leaving RSU 5 will be on the Nov. 6 ballot. RSU 5 includes Freeport and Pownal.

The Durham Educational Exploration Committee will present data gathered in recent months at the 7 p.m. forum at the Durham Community School.

Durham is one of several communities that are considering similar ballot proposals this fall, including Arundel, North Yarmouth, Glenburn and Veazie.

If Durham voters agreed to pursue withdrawal, the Board of Selectmen would form a withdrawal committee to negotiate a withdrawal agreement with the school district.

Then, town voters would be asked to consider the withdrawal agreement. If approved, it would pave the way to leave the district.

If Durham left RSU 5, the town’s students would continue to attend the community school for kindergarten through eighth grade and attend high schools in other communities.

Durham students currently attend Freeport High School.
