Maine residents are cleaning up again after the second wintry storm in recent days.
The Portland Public Schools are closed for the day as crews continue to clear city streets of the 9 inches of snow that accumulated overnight.
The National Weather Service reports that the storm dropped up to 10 inches of snow on other parts of the state, including Saco, slowing afternoon and evening travel. State police reduced the speed limit to 45 mph on the Maine Turnpike at the height of the storm, but no major accidents were blamed on the weather and conditions should improve for commuters on Wednesday.
Tuesday’s snowfall came on top of the one foot or more that fell in some areas over the weekend.
Behind the snow came some biting cold. At 6 a.m., Portland was reporting a temperature of 18 degrees with a wind chill making it feel like just 4 degrees. Milder temperatures are expected for later in the week.
The weather service says temperatures will be around freezing on Wednesday. Meteorologist Chris Kimble says the sunshine “should help melt the roads.”
