Chris Mitchell scored twice, Andrew Whipple had a goal and two assists and eighth-seeded South Portland (12-7) held on for a 5-3 win over Lake Region/Fryeburg/Oxford Hills (8-11) in a Western Class A boys’ hockey preliminary at Portland Ice Arena.

The Red Riots led 3-0 after one period, then made it a four-goal cushion on Christian Guignard’s power-play goal midway through the second.

The IceCats got second-period goals from Mason LaPlante and Davis Turner, and pulled within one on Cam Hill’s goal at 7:10 of the third. Kyle Halvorsen sealed it for South Portland with an empty-netter with 36 seconds left.

The Red Riots will face top-ranked Falmouth in the quarterfinals Tuesday.
