A recent Sunday Telegram editorial (July 13, Our View: “Long summer break leaves kids behind”) suggests year-round schooling “would not add much cost to the typical Maine school year.”

The significant cost you have overlooked is retrofitting hundreds of older school buildings with air conditioning.

Hot and humid classrooms will not be conducive to learning. Adding air conditioning to existing buildings would cost untold millions of dollars that would come from somewhere else in school budgets.
