A cool, but bright morning is underway across the region with temperatures in the 40s for many. There are some 30s on the map, however these are the exception not the rule. There are no advisories for any frost today.
The weather for the next 5days looks absolutely fantastic with most days having abundant sunshine.

Temperatures are going to be seasonably mild today and tomorrow ahead of a cold front pushing south from northern Maine. This will bring a dramatic change to the air on Friday morning when many of us will see 30s to start the day. I do expect some frost advisories to be issued, although the coastline and immediate inland areas should be frost free.

The map below shows highs this afternoon around the state. We all know how big Maine is, but look at the wide range of readings from south to north. Notice the chilly air over northern Maine? That is our weather for Friday and why highs on that day will be 10 degrees cooler than today.

Some of you asked about taking out the window air conditioning units. I would say unless you have an extremely low tolerance for a bit of humidity you can take them out. This time of year with close to 12 hours of darkness and a low sun angle the nights will be cooler and your house won’t be nearly as warm during the day even if we get one warm day.

Since the start of the month we have seen a dramatic change in our temperatures. Look as the preliminary monthly data from the National Weather Service below. I put a red line where we flipped from summer to fall. Notice the first part of the month saw temperatures above normal every day and since then we have been mainly below normal. The average is still running above because that first week of warmth was so far above average.

It will be interesting to see how the month ends up. I had predicted back in early August the monthly average for September would be above normal. Now that half the month is over, it’s going to be close. While we will turn cooler briefly late this week, the weekend is looking stunning with abundant sunshine and highs in the 60s Saturday rising well into the 70s for Sunday. Sunday is going to be so nice a trip to the beach might be in order.

The Atlantic hurricane season continues to remain very quiet and although there is a hurricane in the middle of the ocean it poses no threat to land and there are no other systems looking like they might develop for now. The Pacific has been much more active this hurricane season and continues to remain active this morning.

Notice the two maps below showing the current state of tropical systems off both sides of the United States. This active Pacific and quite Atlantic is a similar pattern to what we saw back in the 1970s.
