A pregnant woman and her child were killed in a hit-and-run collision Tuesday afternoon in Lewiston and police sought her boyfriend for questioning in connection with the case.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit was sent to the city to assist local police in their investigation.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, confirmed that 32-year-old Laudrinha Kubeloso, who was four months pregnant, was killed when she was struck by a sport-utility vehicle.

McCausland said the driver who hit Kubeloso was operating a blue 2001 Suzuki SUV with Maine license plate 6593 UJ.

McCausland said police want to question 33-year-old Evaristo De Deus – the victim’s boyfriend – in connection with the hit-and-run. Police believe that De Deus was operating the SUV when it struck Kubeloso from behind near the intersection of Birch and Howe streets around 3 p.m.

Kubeloso, who moved to Lewiston from Angola, was transported to a Lewiston hospital following the incident. She died around 8:45 p.m.

Police say De Deus is a black male, who is 5-feet-8 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. He lives at 37 Union St. in Lewiston. According to the state Bureau of Investigations, De Deus has no criminal record.

The Major Crimes Unit is responsible for investigations involving homicides, suspicious deaths and child abuse cases, according to the department’s website.
