The very fact that the city of Portland is entering into negotiations with Uber regarding what rules it would like to follow is baffling to me.

There are already state and local regulations in place for companies that carry passengers for hire. Nowhere in those regulations does it say that if you order the ride via a smartphone app, the current rules don’t apply. After all, these rules are in place to protect the public.

There is no question Uber is providing the same service as a taxi or black car service and should be regulated the same, including local taxi regulations and vehicle registration rules, such as “hire” plates, and commercial insurance with required minimums.

Plain and simple: If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck! There is no room for negotiation.
