A natural gas leak near the intersection of Route 88 and Route 1 in Falmouth forced police and fire personnel to shut Route 1 down for nearly an hour Tuesday night. Several businesses and a condominium complex also were evacuated.

The stretch of Route 1 between Waldo’s convenience store and Wal-Mart is being reconstructed, and Fire Chief Howard Rice said an electrical contractor was digging into the roadway and accidentally ruptured a gas line. The leak was reported around 8:30 p.m.

As a precaution, Rice said emergency crews evacuated about a dozen people, who were inside an office complex at 170 U.S. Route One, as well as the residents of three condominium units at Colonial Village.

Summit Natural Gas of Maine repaired the leak.
