A bicyclist was taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition after a collision with a pickup truck at the intersection of Yale Street and Allen Avenue in Portland on Thursday afternoon.
Police closed Allen Avenue between Washington and Forest avenues at 4:15 p.m. and said the road, which is typically congested during the evening commute, would remain closed for two hours. Allen Avenue reopened around 6 p.m.
Assistant Police Chief Vern Malloch said the 45-year-old bicyclist from Portland, whose name has not been released, suffered serious internal injuries and was in serious condition at Maine Medical Center.
The victim was hit by a tan 2010 Toyota Tundra pickup truck that was hauling a trailer. The driver was identified as a 69-year-old man from Steep Falls. The crash happened at 3:15 p.m. as the driver turned left out of Yale Street onto Allen Avenue and the bicyclist was headed north on Allen Avenue.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
