Scarborough police used gas Thursday afternoon to bring about the surrender of a New York City man wanted for breaking parole.

Scarborough’s Special Enforcement Unit was made aware of an individual that may have been staying at 122 Running Hill Road and was reported to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of the Bronx, New York. According to Sgt. John O’Malley, Kellen Adams, 33, had absconded from parole in New York where he was serving three years of parole after an eight-year prison sentence for robbery.

A nationwide warrant had been entered for his arrest, and there was also a Maine warrant for traffic violations, according to Scarborough police, he said.

A brief investigation led officers to believe that Adams could be armed and dangerous since charges in New York included the possession of a loaded firearm during the commission of a robbery and that Adams had been previously charged in Scarborough with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon (knife), O’Malley said.

With this information it was determined that an abundance of caution should be used for all parties’ safety, O’Malley said. The Southern Maine Regional SWAT team was deployed. The team is comprised of Scarborough, South Portland and Cape Elizabeth officers. They attempted to call Adams out of the house via a public address system, however, he would not cooperate or make contact with officers. After 30 minutes of requesting him to surrender, gas was deployed into the building causing Adams to exit and surrender 10 minutes later without incident.

Adams has been charged with being a fugitive from justice. He is being held at the Cumberland County Jail pending his extradition to New York.
