KENNEBUNK — Father Placidas Barius O.F.M., 95, of St. Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunk, died Friday morning at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

Father Placid was born in Kretinga, Lithuania on Jan. 1, 1920, a son of Pranas and Ona (Zvaginaite) Barius- Barisa. Father Placid entered the Franciscan Order in Kretinga, Lithuania on July 30, 1936, and took his Final Vows (Solemn Profession) in Munchen, Germany on Oct. 1, 1942. After finishing his theological studies, he was ordained in Germany. Father Placid immigrated to the United States in 1948. He later moved to Canada in 1953, and served as pastor at the Resurrection Parish in Toronto from 1955 until 1973. He was then transferred to Brooklyn, New York in 1974, and served from there from 1975 until 1985. Father Placid then moved to Kennebunk where he served as the provincial superior from 1985 until 1997.

Father Placid enjoyed fishing and traveled to the Canadian North for many wilderness fishing excursions. He enjoyed remote locations for these fishing excursions during his vacations.

A time of visitation will be held on Monday, Dec. 14 from 9 –11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery at 28 Beach Ave., Kennebunk. A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m. at the monastery. Burial will be in Lithuania at a later date.
