The vitriol in recent letters compels a response. Two by William H. Slavick (March 3) and Ursula Slavick (Feb. 27) are examples.

Hoping to influence voters through outlandish claims, William Slavick calls Henry Kissinger (who brought our boys back from Vietnam) a war criminal and states that “Zionist racists” want control of the Middle East.

Through a warped litany of half-truths and outright lies, the writer connects rants to Hillary Clinton, thus insinuating that those of us who find Clinton the best candidate to guide us into the future and support American democracy on a planet plagued by strife and fanaticism are morally bereft. The discourse in such letters defies reason.

Kissinger a war criminal? Wrong. Terrorists, the Islamic State, Boko Haram and other power mongers in the Middle East define the acts of a war criminal: murder and ethnic cleansing of Christian Arabs, Muslim sects and minorities, women and children.

“Zionist racists” want to control the Middle East? Wrong, anti-Semitic and infllammatory. How can 13.4 million Jews in the whole world (almost 4 million fewer than in 1939) be accused of being racists? Isn’t it survival that Israel desires?

Look at a map. Israel is a democratic nation 1/19th the size of California, surrounded by political dissatisfaction, unrest and 22 separate Muslim nations possessing 640 times the land mass and populated by 250 million Arabs, with brotherly ties to 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide, currently in the midst of revolution and controlled by dictatorships and/or terrorists.

Given the crucial issues facing us nationally and abroad, this presidential election will have critical consequences. Individual unbiased consideration based upon solid facts, reason and reality rather than upon misdirected anger, herd mentality, and fear-mongering should occupy voters’ minds and discourse.

We plan to vote for the most qualified and experienced candidate for president of the United States, and that is Hillary Clinton!
