As you read this, terrorists are plotting attacks in the United States just like the one they executed Tuesday in Brussels. And as we just witnessed, jihadists can execute attacks in spite of heightened security. The goal of U.S. counter-terror policy is to prevent an attack, not simply bring successful attackers to justice.

Yet in spite of attacks in San Bernardino, Paris, Boston and Tuesday in Brussels, we still have elected officials acting foolishly. For instance, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree is more concerned about tattoo placement than about protecting Maine families.

She is adamant about bringing unvetted individuals into Maine. Pingree disregards the warning from the director of the FBI that the U.S. cannot vet individuals when there is no data on their background.

Pingree would say that stopping immigration is against our core values – end of story. But she is misguided. America has, and always will, welcome immigrants. What she fails to recognize is that immigration can, and definitely should, be done in a way that does not endanger our country, cities and families.

Not all immigrants share the basic American value of peaceful coexistence. Maybe it’s because of political correctness, but Pingree’s lack of awareness is increasing risk to all Mainers.
