A Portland man led police on a high-speed chase from Freeport to Standish on Tuesday morning before crashing, state police said.
Raymond Ireland, 33, was recognized by Freeport police, who tried to stop him for multiple outstanding warrants. But Ireland kept driving.
Freeport police broke off the chase, but Maine State Police followed Ireland on the Falmouth spur. They, too, broke off the chase because of Ireland’s erratic driving.
The car was later tracked to the Gorham-Standish area and troopers and Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies followed Ireland onto Route 35.
The chase ended when deputies deployed spike mats that deflated Ireland’s tires. The car, from Enterprise car rentals, overturned near Woodrow Drive.
Ireland was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. After he was released from the hospital, he was taken to the Cumberland County Jail in Portland, where he was held without bail on charges of failure to pay fine warrants and probation revocation.
