PORTLAND — Street vendors hoping to sell to cruise ship passengers will have to use a new “Waterfront Marketplace,” city spokeswoman Jessica Grondin announced May 27.

Extending along the green space and trail on Commercial and Thames streets, the space will be used when cruise ships with more than 1,000 passengers berth at the Ocean Gateway Terminal.

Grondin said vendors will no longer be allowed to set up tables on the water side of Thames Street in front of the terminal, or along the water side of Commercial Street between India and Dana streets.

“The Marketplace will be for cruise ship passengers, tourists, islanders, and residents of Portland alike to enjoy. It will also make Commercial Street safer for pedestrians and ferry passengers” Grondin said.
