Falmouth is testing water at the town landing this summer for pathogens that could pose a health risk. Testing will be conducted regularly through Labor Day weekend.

Water in lakes, ponds and beaches can be contaminated by fecal matter that carries harmful bacteria and viruses. Contamination can come from broken septic and sewage treatment systems, agriculture runoff, pet and wildlife waste, boat runoff and poor sanitation at the beach. Contaminated water can be carried off the land and into rivers and streams through stormwater.

Falmouth Sustainability Coordinator Kimberly Darling said the town council asked for the testing to make sure the swimming areas at the landing and nearby beach are safe.

The town will follow state testing guidelines and use federal contamination levels to determine when there is an increased chance of getting sick from the water.

Falmouth will use colored flags at the landing to indicate water quality. Green means it’s safe to swim, yellow means the public is advised to avoid the water and red means the swimming area is closed.
