A duplex on Hale Street in Brunswick was mostly destroyed Tuesday by a fire, and investigators from the state Fire Marshal’s Office and the Brunswick Arson Investigation Unit are trying to determine the cause, said Brunswick Fire Capt. Matt Barnes.

The call about the fire came in at 11:57 a.m., Barnes said. The first firefighters arrived five minutes later.

The first units on scene immediately called for a second alarm, which dispatched fire fighters from Bath, West Bath, Topsham and Freeport to the scene.

It took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control, Barnes said.

He did not know if there were smoke detectors in the building.

Four people were displaced from the two-unit building, according to the owners, John and Beverly Fitzpatrick, who do not live at the property.

No one was hurt, Barnes said, and the Red Cross of Southern Maine was called to assist the people displaced.
