A late-game goal by Lauren Topchik failed to spark a Red Storm comeback against visiting Marshwood on Thursday night, Sept. 1. The Hawks’ Hannah Costin finished the evening with a hat trick while teammate Celine Lawrence added one to capture a 4-1 W.
“We got owned,” said Storm head coach Kerry Mariello. “We took a knockout punch. That’s what we were dealt. [Marshwood] is an outstanding team, obviously.”
Costin tallied two in the first half – the stretch’s lone points – to put her squad ahead at the break. Lawrence then contributed her goal early in the second half before Topchik finally managed to put Scarborough on the board, around the 15-minute mark.
“We made a lot mistakes and they outplayed us in every category,” said Mariello. “The only good thing I can say is that it’s early. We have a lot to work on. We made some critical mistakes on our few offensive opportunities; they took advantage of theirs.”
“There’s not a whole lot you can do with a player like that,” Mariello said of Costin. “It’s a speed factor, and speed wins. She has speed, poise, composure and execution.”
The Storm traveled to Massabesic on Saturday the 3rd, losing a high-noon showdown with the Mustangs 2-1. They host Deering on Wednesday the 7th.
