Tappan Fitzgerald II has resigned from the South Portland school board, resulting in a vacancy for District 5.

Fitzgerald, who resigned Monday, Sept. 12, served as board chairman in 2014.

The City Council will appoint a District 5 resident next month to fill the vacancy until December 2017, when he or she will be replaced by the winner of the District 5 race in the November general election.

Residents interested in the interim position must submit an application, resume and letter of intent to the City Clerk’s Office by Tuesday, Oct. 4. Eligibility requirements and further details can be found on the city’s website, www.southportland.org, under Boards & Committees, Board of Education.

The council will interview candidates at a special workshop Monday, Oct. 17, and intends to appoint a candidate to the seat at its regular Oct. 17 meeting.
