A crash in the 1300 block area of outer Forest Avenue backed up traffic in all directions near Morrill’s Corner during the Tuesday evening commute.

At least two cars collided, sending more than one person to the hospital, Deputy Fire Cheif Keith Gautreau said. No other details were available Tuesday night. The extent of the crash, how many cars were involved and the number of people who went to the hospital were unknown.

“I can confirm its a giant mess out there right now,” Gautreau said.

The York County Sheriff’s Office said a pickup truck and car collided at Alfred and Limerick roads in the town of Arundel. In that crash, which was reported around 4:30 p.m., two people were transported to Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford with minor injuries. Traffic had to be rerouted around the accident scene for 90 minutes.

Tuesday evening’s crashes were preceded by a rash of minor accidents that took place Tuesday morning. Icy roads caused several minor accidents, most of them in York County.

The accidents were described as slide-offs by a dispatcher for the York County Regional Communications Center. No serious injuries were reported.

By 11 a.m., the Maine Department Transportation had lowered the speed limit along I-295 to 40 mph between Topsham and Gardiner because of slick road conditions.
