FALMOUTH — Maine State Police said said the man who died in a two-car crash on northbound Interstate 295 Tuesday night was 36-year-old Joshua Martin of North Yarmouth.

He died when his car was struck from behind as traffic was slowing down for another crash a short distance away, where a vehicle ended up on the median guardrail.  The second car was driven by 17-year-old Margaret Anne King of West Bath.  She had minor injuries and was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick by her parents.

Trooper Robert Burke said Martin was driving a 2005 PT Cruiser and King was operating a 2007 Volvo Cross Country. Burke said anyone who witnessed the crash and has not spoken to police is asked to call Maine State Police in Gray, 657-3030.

The highway was closed for several hours because of the accidents near Exit 10/Bucknam Road. Troopers, Falmouth police and Department of Transportation workers were able to turn around hundreds of vehicles that were stuck in the traffic backup after a detour was set up in Portland to prevent any other vehicles from entering the northbound lane.

Troopers said weather likely was not a factor in the crash.
