SOUTH PARIS — The Thornton Academy football team held a slim 13-0 lead at halftime on Friday night at Oxford Hills, but the Golden Trojans would roll in the second half as they picked up a 40-0 victory and improved to 5-1 on the season.
Thornton Academy, which dropped a 49-14 decision to Bonny Eagle last week, would get a 5-yard touchdown run from Jason Montano in the first quarter. Brady Forbes added the point after and it was 7-0.
Cam Jones added to the Trojans’ lead in the second quarter when he picked off an Oxford Hills pass and returned it 60 yards for the score. The extra point was no good and TA held a 13-0 advantage.
The Trojans took a 21-0 lead hen Julien Bailey Cottle scored on a 13-yard run, and QB Will Mitchell hooked up with Anthony Bracamonte for the 2-point conversion in the third quarter.
CJ LaBreck would then haul in a 27-yard TD pass from Mitchell to make it a 28-0 lead in the third.
Still in the third quarter, Mitchell tossed his second touchdown pass of the night with a 44-yard scoring strike to Bracamonte to make it 34-0.
The final score would come on Tommy Palmer’s 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
Mitchell finished 7-of-11 for 120 yards and two scores. The sophomore signal caller also had 54 rushing yards on nine carries.
Grant Dow led the Trojans’ rushing attack with 76 yards on the ground.
Thornton Academy will host South Portland next Saturday.
Wells 53, Yarmouth 7
YARMOUTH — Nolan Potter scored two rushing touchdowns and Tyler Bridge returned a punt 85 yards for a score to lead the Warriors to the win.
Brian Roberts scored on a 57-yard run for Wells, which also got a 53-yard TD run from Jonah Potter and Michael Wrigley scored on a 35-yard run.
Payton McKay added a 25-yard TD run and Jack Talevi scored from 11 yards out for the Warriors.
Field Hockey
Biddeford 4, Thornton Academy 2
BIDDEFORD — The visiting Golden Trojans took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Biddeford outscored Thornton Academy 4-1 down the stretch to secure the win.
Taylor Ouellette opened the scoring as she put TA up 1-0.
Biddeford would then score three goals in six minutes in the second half — including one goal that made history.
Sarrah Marcotte scored to break the Biddeford single season record for goals with 17. Brooklyn Goff provided the assist on the record-setting score.
Peyton Mckeown would then score off an assist from Katie Monson to give Biddeford the lead for good.
Monson got into the scoring when she took a pass from Hailey Allen and scored to make it 3-1.
Abby Allen provided the final score for Biddeford on an unassisted goal.
Thornton’s final goal once again came from Ouellette with two minutes left.
Biddeford goalie Taylor Wildes had six saves, while TA keeper Madison Vachon stopped 12 shots.
Old Orchard Beach 2, Wells 0
OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Mariah Murphy scored on an assist from Mikayla Grier just 45 seconds into the game and it turned out to be the gamewinner.
Freshman Brianna Newton scored OOB’s second goal on a nice pass from Mariah Murphy.
OOB’s Leah Green had six saves in goal. Wells goalie Amanda Ring stopped 10 shots.
Boys Soccer
Falmouth 5, Thornton Academy 3
SACO — Nate Arrants and Thomas Fitzgerald each scored two goals to lead Falmouth.
Eric McCullum scored twice and Chase Pierce had a goal for Thornton Academy.
The Golden Trojans would get six saves combined from Travis Snyder and Cam Lebreque.
Girls Soccer
Old Orchard Beach 3, St. Dom’s 1
OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The host Seagulls would get two goals from Payje Leclerc as they improved to 6-3-2 on the year.
Ava Clark also had a goal for OOB, which got an assist from Maegan Halle.
OOB goalie Kaitlyn Cote finished with nine saves in the win.
