Government is attacking our public schools and reducing their funds. We cannot trust the state. We cannot trust that Longfellow and Reiche schools will be rebuilt later if the economy changes, or if the City Council changes.

Do you know about the fate of Nathan Clifford School in Portland? It was rated No. 1 on the state’s list to rebuild, but, as usual, the state money did not come.

A referendum to replace Nathan Clifford failed. Instead of being rebuilt, Nathan Clifford was sold to a developer in 2013 for $1. What was once the heart and soul of a community was lost.

It has taken us 23 years, many studies and three architects to get us here – so many failed opportunities. Are we going to ignore our schools again? The fact is if we do not take care of our schools ourselves, no one will. Rebuild all four schools now.
