A couple of weeks ago, I had the honor of shaking the hand of Travis Mills. We were each going to Washington, D.C., I to visit my son and his family for the holidays and he to meet with Sen. Angus King and then give a motivational speech. I was able to take the opportunity to tell him how much I admired him, and he wished me a Merry Christmas.

During the flight, I looked up his foundation (travismills.org) and learned it had 501(c)3 nonprofit status. When we landed at Reagan National Airport, I saw him again and told him I was going to make a donation. He immediately said, “I don’t take a penny from the foundation.”

Meeting and talking with him has made an indelible impression on me. Here is a man who bravely served our country, courageously survived his massive injuries and who continues to inspire others with his selfless humility, his warmth and his smile.

I salute you, Travis Mills, as we all should.
